Seven Ways to Make Your Advising Office More Welcoming

In general, academic advisors and student success coaches are warm and welcoming people who are dedicated to student success. They often got the job in part because of their friendliness, approachability, and communication skills.

But that doesn’t mean college students will never feel nervous about seeing their academic advisor.

Students experience stress about seeing their advisor for several reasons.

For example, research indicates that a significant proportion of college students experience anxiety related to academic performance, including concerns about course selection, degree requirements, and graduation timelines. Studies have also found that some college students may be reluctant to seek academic advising due to factors such as fear of judgment, embarrassment about a lack of clear academic or professional path, uncertainty about where to go for help, or poor experiences with a past counselor or advisor.

One way to reduce their stress is to disarm students with warm and welcoming spaces.

Here are some ways to make your office more welcoming:

  1. Warm and Inviting Decor: Choose decor and furnishings that are comfortable, visually appealing, and reflect your college spirit and culture. Consider incorporating elements such as plants, artwork, comfortable seating, and natural light to create a welcoming atmosphere.

  2. Personalized Touches: Add personal touches to the office space, such as photos, artwork, or mementos, to make students and coworkers feel more connected to you.

  3. School Pride: Show your commitment to the college through decorations, such as a pennant or poster.

  4. Think about your Colors: Lighter and warmer paint colors and furniture colors are more relaxing and welcoming. Does your space look dark and drab or light and welcoming?

  5. Declutter: Students report they don’t feel as comfortable in spaces that are full of clutter, such as piles of papers stacked everywhere, walls and bulletin boards overflowing, and little floor space. Look in your office and throughout the office area and ask if clutter is taking over your space.

  6. Inspiring Quotes and Messages: Display motivational quotes, affirmations, or college values prominently in the office space. Inspirational messages can uplift spirits.

  7. Welcoming Reception Area: Ensure that the reception area is welcoming and well-staffed to greet visitors and students with a friendly smile and provide assistance as needed.

By providing a warm and welcoming environment, your students will feel more comfortable, relaxed, and excited to come back and see you for another academic advising appointment.
